Introduction

Kit Green’s connection to the origins of the Stanford Research Institute (SRI) remote-viewing programme is one of the strongest documented parts of his wider UFO-era reputation. It matters because it shows that Green was not merely a later storyteller attaching himself to intelligence folklore. Declassified records, later programme histories and retrospective accounts place him near the earliest CIA interest in parapsychology during the Cold War. What that link proves, however, is narrower than many enthusiasts claim.

SRI Origins illustration 1 The available record supports the view that Green was a genuine CIA contact involved in early discussions that helped bring paranormal claims to official attention. It does not show that he personally validated remote viewing, proved psychic functioning, or possessed secret confirmation that extraordinary claims were true. The distinction is central to assessing Green’s credibility. His role demonstrates access and institutional relevance. It does not automatically validate the underlying phenomenon. The 1972 CIA-SRI Contact Trail

The most frequently cited origin story begins in 1972, before the better-known Star Gate programme existed in its later form. According to later histories of the project, physicist Russell Targ met Christopher “Kit” Green, then working within the CIA, to discuss parapsychology and possible intelligence implications. Harold Puthoff subsequently contacted Green regarding experiments involving psychic claimant Ingo Swann. These interactions became part of the chain that eventually led to exploratory CIA funding for work at Stanford Research Institute. This chronology matters because it places Green near the beginning of the government’s interest rather than at the end of an already established programme. The historical question is not whether Green invented a connection decades later. The available documentation indicates that he was present during the period when intelligence officials were deciding whether unusual human-perception claims deserved investigation. The broader Cold War context also helps explain why such contacts occurred. American intelligence agencies were receiving reports that the Soviet Union was investing resources in research related to psychotronics, psychic functioning and other unconventional subjects. Even officials who were sceptical could justify exploratory research if they feared a potential intelligence gap. Multiple retrospective accounts describe this concern as part of the rationale for early CIA engagement with SRI. [UC Davis]ucdavis.edupsychic spying research produces credible evidence1970s at the Stanford Research Institute – now called SRI International – in Menlo Park, Calif. The program was initiated by the CIA in…

For Green’s credibility, this is significant because it aligns with a verifiable historical process. The CIA did fund exploratory work. SRI researchers did pursue remote-viewing experiments. Green’s name appears within that environment rather than emerging solely from later UFO narratives. What the Records Verify About Green

The strongest evidence concerns Green’s position, not the success of the programme.

Publicly available biographical records independently confirm that Green served in senior analytical and scientific roles within the CIA during the period in question. His career included work connected to science and technology assessment, making it plausible that he would encounter unconventional research proposals. His presence in discussions about psychic claims therefore fits his documented professional background rather than appearing as an obvious historical anomaly. [Journal of Scientific Exploration]journalofscientificexploration.orgChristopher Green (“Kit Green”), at the time with the CIA, to discuss parapsychology. Later, Dr. Harold Puthoff…Read more…

The available record supports several relatively modest conclusions:

  • Green had genuine CIA connections during the formative period of SRI remote-viewing research.
  • Researchers including Targ and Puthoff viewed him as a relevant government contact.
  • His involvement demonstrates proximity to intelligence decision-making about anomalous claims.
  • He occupied a position where unusual scientific proposals could be assessed rather than immediately dismissed. [Journal of Scientific Exploration]journalofscientificexploration.orgChristopher Green (“Kit Green”), at the time with the CIA, to discuss parapsychology. Later, Dr. Harold Puthoff…Read more…

What the record does not clearly establish is equally important.

There is no publicly available evidence showing that Green personally authenticated remote viewing as a proven capability. There is no declassified document demonstrating that he independently verified psychic functioning. Nor is there evidence that his participation reflected a CIA consensus that paranormal perception had been established scientifically. The available material mostly documents contact, interest and programme initiation rather than proof. [CIA]cia.govrd Research Institute, later known as SRI International, and…Read more…

This distinction often disappears in later retellings. A reader may hear that Green was involved in the origins of remote viewing and assume this means he possessed secret knowledge that the phenomenon worked. The documentary trail does not support that stronger conclusion.

Why Official Interest Was Not the Same as Validation

One of the most persistent misunderstandings in remote-viewing history is the assumption that government funding equals government confirmation.

The CIA and associated defence organisations funded many exploratory programmes during the Cold War. Some produced useful results. Others did not. Funding often reflected uncertainty rather than confidence. In the case of remote viewing, the official question was whether unusual perception claims might have intelligence utility. The existence of that question does not answer it. [newdualism.org]newdualism.orgCIA Initiated Remote Viewing At Stanford Research InstituteCIA-Initiated Remote Viewing At Stanford Research InstituteIn July 1995 the CIA declassified, and approved for release, documents reveali…Published: July 1995

The later evaluations of the programme illustrate the problem. Supporters argued that some experimental results exceeded chance expectations and deserved further study. Critics argued that methodological weaknesses, statistical interpretation issues and failures of operational reliability prevented firm conclusions. Even among experts reviewing the same data, there was no consensus about what the results actually proved. The program was initiated by the CIA in… [CIA]cia.govSRI conducted by Puthoff, Targ, and their several associates…. Ingo Swann visits Puthoff…Read more…

This is where Green’s credibility assessment becomes more complicated.

His documented involvement in the programme’s early history strengthens claims that he had access to unusual intelligence discussions. It does not strengthen claims that remote viewing itself was demonstrated beyond reasonable doubt. A person can be genuinely connected to a real government programme while still being wrong about the programme’s conclusions.

Where Access Stops Becoming Validation

The most useful way to view Green’s SRI connection is as evidence of access rather than evidence of paranormal truth.

For supporters, the episode shows that Green occupied circles where classified research decisions were being made. That weakens suggestions that he fabricated his intelligence associations after the fact. The SRI connection fits a broader pattern of documented government and contractor relationships. [Journal of Scientific Exploration]journalofscientificexploration.orgChristopher Green (“Kit Green”), at the time with the CIA, to discuss parapsychology. Later, Dr. Harold Puthoff…Read more…

For sceptics, the same episode illustrates a recurring problem. Intelligence agencies sometimes investigate low-probability or fringe ideas because the perceived cost of ignoring them appears higher than the cost of testing them. In that environment, participation in a programme does not automatically confer scientific credibility on the programme’s claims. [CIA]cia.govCIA-RDP96-00789R002600250001-6on the study of telepathic clairvoyance, recently termed. "remote viewing" by Stanford Research Institute (…

This distinction becomes especially relevant when later UFO and UAP discussions invoke Green’s background. The strongest interpretation is that Green’s SRI link demonstrates real institutional access to a genuine intelligence project. The weakest interpretation is that the link proves remote viewing worked, proved paranormal perception, or indirectly validates later extraordinary claims connected to UFOs.

The documentary record supports the first conclusion far more strongly than the second. Green’s role in the SRI origin story is important because it is verifiable. It shows he was close to the beginning of a remarkable and controversial intelligence experiment. What it does not show is that the experiment ultimately confirmed the extraordinary claims that inspired it.
