The controversy centred on footage discussed during the fourth season of The Secret of Skinwalker Ranch. Viewers were shown a small object crossing the field of view at high apparent speed. Why distance controls speed claims
The central sceptical argument was straightforward physics rather than a claim about UFOs specifically.
A camera records angular motion across its field of view. To convert that into an actual velocity, investigators need to know how far away the object is. If the distance estimate changes dramatically, the calculated speed changes as well.
For example:
- A tiny insect a few feet from a camera can cross the frame extremely quickly.
- A bird at moderate range can produce a similar visual track.
- A distant aircraft or unknown object would require a very different velocity calculation.
- Without reliable range information, multiple explanations can fit the same video.

Supporters can reasonably reply that unusual observations deserve open-minded investigation and that not every anomaly can be immediately resolved.
