Why quantum limits matter
The most important part of the story is not that negative energy can occur. It is that nature appears to impose severe restrictions on it.
Physicists Lawrence Ford and Thomas Roman developed a series of results often called quantum inequalities. These are mathematical constraints on negative-energy states. This is the point that often disappears when UFO discussions borrow terminology from theoretical physics. The obstacle is not simply that scientists have not yet built a warp drive. The obstacle is that some of the mathematics suggests nature may actively prevent the required conditions from existing at useful scales.

The persistence of these ideas can make them seem more established than they are.

The evidential gap. Even if unidentified aerial phenomena exhibit unusual behaviour, that does not identify the underlying mechanism.
