Why timing alone cannot establish causation
The strongest public version of the autoimmune argument is essentially chronological: unusual experiences allegedly occurred, and illnesses were diagnosed afterwards. That sequence may be emotionally compelling, but it is not enough to establish medical causation.
Many autoimmune diseases develop slowly over years. Symptoms can be vague, intermittent and difficult to recognise during early stages. By the time a diagnosis is made, the underlying disease process may have been active long before the event that patients later associate with it. That distinction matters because it leaves open several competing interpretations.
One possibility is the extraordinary interpretation favoured by some believers: that an unknown external phenomenon produces both anomalous experiences and biological effects.
A second possibility is that intense stress, fear, sleep disruption or prolonged psychological strain associated with unusual experiences could contribute indirectly to health problems in susceptible individuals. Stress-related effects on immune function are extensively studied, even though proving direct causation remains difficult. Verified diagnoses

Clear timelines
Investigators would need reliable information about when symptoms first appeared, when diagnoses were made, and whether warning signs existed before the alleged exposure.
Control groups
Researchers would need to compare exposed individuals with similar people who were not exposed. Without comparison groups, it is difficult to determine whether illness rates are unusual.
Exposure definition
A major problem for hitchhiker claims is defining what the exposure actually is. Is it a location, a physical agent, a psychological experience, a social process, or something else entirely? Without a measurable exposure, causal testing becomes extremely difficult.
Independent publication
Findings would need publication in peer-reviewed medical or epidemiological literature so that other researchers could examine methods, challenge assumptions and attempt replication.
Biological mechanism
